Home Design Made Simple: Small Space Solutions
Feeling cramped and claustrophobic? Organization, storage, and a well thought-out plan are the first steps in taking control and putting function and order back into small spaces. Don’t be afraid of large furniture and avoid making the mistake of pushing everything against the walls. Arrange rooms to feel inviting and warm by creating zones for reading, lounging, and doing work.
Put a little love in your room
Making the most of a modest amount of square footage doesn’t have to be a daunting task. Start by selecting neutral paint colors. Using a soft brown or pale blue can give the illusion of taller walls. Also, incorporating things you love into your kitchen or bath such as family heirlooms or photos will distract your mind from the size of the room.
Replacing a large vanity with a smaller pedestal sink will free up space give a dramatic touch of class to any tiny bathroom. Choosing lightly colored flooring also makes your room feel much more open.
Below are a few guidelines to manage your space and create a place you’ll love to be.
1. Get focused
Create a focal point in your small space. Place a piece of artwork on one wall, paint one wall a darker color, or install a small light fixture in the room. By drawing attention to one thing it will take attention away from the actual size of the room.
2. Reflection is key
Use furnishings that reflect! Strategically place mirrors, mirrored panels, or reflective/metallic furniture in your home to create the illusion of more space. The reflection makes the eye feel like there is more to the room size then there really is!
3. Form follows function
This method works well in studio apartments or in small rooms. Hang curtains on walls to create the look of a window- it creates the appearance of two rooms instead of just one. Study the space in the room. Consider various arrangements for furniture, appliances and accessories to get the best idea of how to use the area. Ultimately, a well designed room has function because you live in it; therefore, everything works and is in place.
4. When in doubt- hang it up!
When storage space is a real problem- look up for the answer. For example, in small “galley” like kitchen, you can maximize space by hanging pots and pans above the cook top. Likewise, hanging wine glass racks are not only functional, but a good way to show off your personal sense of style.
5. Be storage savvy
Not having storage space is not necessarily a problem. A higher bed means additional storage space. Buy a wire cart to fit under you kitchen pantry shelves. Add shelves where you see fit- above a washer and dryer, under a kitchen sink.
6. Just say no to clutter
Small spaces look even smaller when clutter is thrown into the mix. Make sure everything is in its place to defeat the clutter. Only place two things on a table, not six. Less is more!
Living large in a small space can be accomplished with a little ingenuity and determination. Today’s trendy lofts and New York style apartments are becoming more cozy and comfortable than ever. You don’t have to feel confined anymore.
